Cornelio "Onnie" Sumangil

Onnie and Menchit
Cornelio or "Onnie" as he is fondly called, is the eldest son of Eliseo "Joving" Sumangil and Julita Aguila-Sumangil. He was born in Cuyapo in April 18, 1935. He left his town at the age of 15 in 1949 for Manila where he studied at Letran College and San Beda College.

During his teen age years, Onnie was active in social activities and one (1) of his most memorable activities was his election as president of the Cuyapo Youth Club in 1951.

He spent his Christmas and summer vacations in Cuyapo and interacted with contemporaries during town fiestas in April.


Although he had a good job as Assistant Manger in the Foreign Department of Bank of Asia (across the U.S. Embassy), he went to the U.S. in 1969 as immigrant at the age of 32  and have been in the international banking for 40 years. In 2000, he retired as SVP for Trade Banking from Bank of America, in in Dallas, Texas.  Because of his strong background in international banking, Citibank New York enticed him to work for them.

Onnie is married to Carmen "Menchit" from Manila. They lived in Minneapolis for ten (10) years and are now based in Dallas, Texas. They have three (3) children, all girls: Sue Sumangil-Buck and  Chona were born in Manila while Teri Sumangil-Arteaga, the youngest was born in Minnesota.

Onnie is the oldest brother of Nando (San Diego, California), "Tito" (Minneapolis, Minnesota) and Mildred Sumangil Mata (San Diego, California).

Onnie is now into international consulting business and  finds time visiting his children together with his wife Menchit.  He travels back to the Philippines from time to time whenever he can.
