Family History

In 1871, Cornelio Sumangil from Sta Maria, Ilocos Sur arrived in Cuyapo and built his home in Sitio Latap. He met and married Juana Ringor, also from Ilocos Sur and started a family. The couple were hard working, thrifty and industrious so they were blessed with several tracts of land numbering to about a hundred hectares. The authorities noticed how wealthy the couple had become such that Cornelio became a Cabeza de Barangay.*

According to Apo Padi, the real last name of the Sumangils is DEL ROSARIO. The del Rosarios hailed from Ilocos and migrated to Nueva Ecija to avoid force labor in Ilocos during the Spanish time. The Spaniards renamed them as Sumangil which means gorging in Ilocano, (sumusuwag in Tagalog). The Spaniards thought that Del Rosario is a holy name and is not appropriate to non-conformists.**
